Oxford City Go Club (http://www.britgo.org/clubs/oxford_c.html) =============================================================== Updated: 2020/04/17 Using the OGS Go server for Virtual Meetings ============================================ <<< Known Problem: OGS may be broken with the MS Internet. >>> <<< Explorer 11 browser. Other browserers believed to be OK.>>> These are notes for playing in our "Virtual Meetings" in our OGS "room" at https://online-go.com/group/4678 (Bookmark this?) Many/most of us will use Zoom video-conferencing (see below) to give us a chance to talk more easily. It is not necessary to use Zoom. The important thing is to play on the OGS Go server. Signing up to the OGS -- once only ================================== Go to https://online-go.com/ (Bookmark this?) Near the bottom, find the [Register] button -- click it --> "Welcome ..." Enter a "username" -- needs to be unique on the OGS Site Password (recommend mixed upper-/lower-case + digits) Optional email: you will need this to use "Chat" -- STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS -- also if you forget your password!! Sign up "for chat need email" Recommend: Get an email sent to you, then ... check your email "inbox"; authorize/ validate Go to the OGS page again -- https://online-go.com/ Maybe, go to "Settings" ... Click on "Home" at top left at right of page click on "Groups" In Search box, at top right, type "Oxford", and then Select "Oxford City Go Club" ... (Bookmark this?) We are not a "public" group, so ... At left, Click on [request to Join Group] Wait until a club administrator ("hanezeki", or "ciderpunx") registers you -- may take days, sorry! To speed this up, just send an email to the Club Secretary -- see far below. You will see a list of members at top right Eventually, consider joining some/all of the 3 club ladders: 9x9, 13x13, and 19x19 For each Virtual Meeting on OGS =============================== We suggest that you always use 2 tabs in your web browser -- one for the OGS Home page, and the other for the Club room's own web-page. First, open the OGS Home page at https://online-go.com/, and -- at top right (or via the drop-down menu at top far left) -- "sign in" with your username, and password. Now -- in another tab -- go to the Club's room at https://online-go.com/group/4678 You can now start playing games. However, we reconmmend that you first look in the "chat" window (at lower left), and then join us with "Zoom" video meeting -- see, below, and also the documentation at http://harryfearnley.com/go/oxford/Zoom-install-use.txt for more details. You will need to get the link for the Zoom meeting from the latest "oxgo" email, or direct from the Club Secretary! Sorry. When you are finished with the Virtual Meeting, please remember to log out from OGS. Other people will then not waste their time challenging you. :-) For each game ============= Before playing any Club room games, please have _two_ OGS tabs/windows open. In one tab (the "Home" tab) stay at "Home". In the other tab (the "Club" tab), select "Oxford City Go Club" from the "Groups" at the right of the "Home" screen. Now -- whichever tab you are using -- when someone sends you a Challenge on OGS, a small pop-up will happen in the "Home" tab, and you should get a single audible notification to warn you to look there. You must look for it there! If you want to talk to the other Club members, you _can_ do this in the "Club" tab. However, it will be easier for us all if you are using Zoom, and if you use that instead, for talking, and text-chatting, with the rest of us. To challenge someone -- for example, me ("hanezeki"): Find my name -- "hanezeki" -- in the list of members at top right of the "Club" page. Remember that here may be more pages of members -- follow the arrow (at bottom left of list)! First -- check that I have a green dot to the left of my name. No green dot, and I am not online! left-click on that name left click on "Challenge" Suggest choosing: Rules : AGA [the same as BGA, and FFG] Game Speed : Live Time Control : Byo-yomi Main Time : 10 minutes Time increment : 30 secs Periods : 5 Choose other values as appropriate. For your first few games on OGS -- while working out how it all works -- I suggest that you play on 9x9 boards, and do NOT play ranked games. As soon as you are comfortable with the technology, do play "ranked" games. This makes it easier to challenge others, especially if you play non-Club players on OGS. Select board size -- you can agree this in a chat on the club's OGS page, or -- better -- using the chat window in Zoom. Then click on "Challenge", and wait for the other person to reply. No Reply? There are 2 reasons why you may not get a prompt reply: a) They have left the server, and do not see your challenge. *** N.B. When you leave the OGS server at the end of the Virtual *** Meeting, please remember to "log out" from the OGS. Do *** this from the drop-down menu at far top left -- "logout" *** is at the bottom of the list. Alternatively, just close *** down all your browser's tabs that connect to the OGS. *** Otherwise, people will probably think that you are still *** there, and may waste their time challenging you! b) They may know that you have challenged them, but cannot find out where/how to reply! *** N.B. To stop this happening to you, when you are challenged *** ... open _two_ OGS tabs/ windows, as suggested above -- *** a "Home" tab, and a "Club" tab -- and select the "Home" *** tab, especially if you have a challenge!. Communication with other people in the Club "room" ================================================== For most people, we _can_ communicate by using the (limited) "chat" facility in the Club's OGS room at https://online-go.com/group/4678 _However_, most of us will use "chat" from within Zoom. We recomment that you use "Zoom" (FREE video-conferencing software) to make communication easier. This lets us talk to each other for free -- with optional video, as well. If you want to use Zoom, then we recommend that you first download, and install, Zoom. Check out: http://harryfearnley.com/go/oxford/Zoom-install-use.txt To save time, please do this before the meeting. *** In any case, call me on Oxford (01865) 248775, if you are desperate *** for help in making this work. :-) Information about some club members on OGS ========================================== To see who are the real people behind some OGS IDs, ...
